Playing volleyball in his hometown of San Diego, Danny Hughes won three CIF Division 3 titles and three league championships for Francis Parker. During that same period he earned a Silver Medal in the 1998 Junior Nationals and was named an All-American that year. After graduating from Parker in 1988, Hughes continued his playing career as a middle blocker at UCSB. While a Gaucho, Hughes received the Golden Eagle Award ('02) and was selected to the Elephant Bar All-Tournament Team ('03). After graduating with a BA in English in 2003, Hughes moved to Australia where he played professionally for two years.
After his stint Down Under, Danny returned to school and acquired an MBA in International Business from Thunderbird School of Global Management.
Returning to San Diego in 2005, Danny helped guide Francis Parker to CIF championships in ‘07, '08, and '09. In 2008, he coached at San Diego Mesa College, where he was the Assistant Coach for both the Men's and Women's teams. Recently, Danny helped guide the UC San Diego Men's volleyball team to a successful 2009-2010 campaign. UC San Diego recorded season sweeps of MPSF opponents Pepperdine, UCLA, and Pacific en route to a #15 national ranking.
In addition to be being the Director of Beach and Bay Volleyball Club, this spring Danny will return to Francis Parker as the Head Coach of the boys' varsity team. Hughes is entering his first year as a Wave coach.
