Four Wave alumni, Kelly Reeves and Karsta Lowe from UCLA and Katie Fuller and Natalie Hagglund of USC, have reached the Division 1 NCAA National Volleyball Championships that will be held this weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
UCLA will face Florida State University on Thursday, December 15, at 4:00pm PST on ESPN2. The Bruins reached the national semi-finals by defeating the University of Texas 3-1. Sophomore Reeves notched 11 kills (including the game-winning attack!) and 11 digs against the Longhorns, and also tallied 9 kills and 14 digs in the Bruins defeat of Penn State University. Lowe has been a contributing freshmen throughout the year.
Florida State has seven foreign-born players on their roster of 14. Senior Jekaterina Stepanova, a 6-2 outside hitter from Riga, Latvia, leads the Seminole's with 410 kills. Senior Visnja Djurdevic, a 6-1 outside from Zitiste, Serbia, follows with 346 kills. Junior Duyqu Duzceler, a 5-10 setter from Istanbul, Turkey, leads the team with 772 assists.
USC meets Illinois in the second semi-final at 6:30 PST Thursday on ESPN2. USC reached the final four after two back-to-back, 5-game nail biters. They defeated host Hawaii in the regional semi-finals in front of a packed house of over 10,000 boisterous Wahine fans. They followed by defeating Pepperdine in another 5-game thriller to earn their bid to the big dance.
Junior opposite Katie Fuller tallied 12 kills and 3 blocks against Hawaii and followed with 17 kills and 3 blocks against Pepperdine. Sophomore Natalie Hagglund, the Pac 12 Libero-of-the-Year, dug 25 balls against Hawaii and another 32 against Pepperdine.
Wave alumnus Victoria Adelhelm, a Pepperdine middle blocker, notched 10 kills and 4 blocks against the Trojans.
The NCAA Championship game will be televised on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 5:30 PST on ESPN2
