Summer was originally from the Northwest, growing up around Seattle, Washington. She had a highly successful high school and club career as a volleyball player and track and field athlete. She continued her indoor volleyball career at San Diego State for four year. During that time, Summer was a team leader and dominant force on the court, helping them win their conference in 2013. She was invited to play with the Junior National (U-21) team for beach volleyball. She gained a love for the beach and ended up playing 1 year at Florida International University where her team finished 4th place at the D1 National Championships in 2015. She went on to play 3 professional beach seasons, where she qualified for the Manhattan Beach Open and competed in several FIVB tournaments. As a result, Summer brings a multifaceted view of the game to WAVE.
Summer started coaching high school camps while attending SDSU and found joy in teaching the sport and moved to coaching beach in 2014 at a local club. She continued to coach in Florida for a local youth team while training for the AVP. After returning to San Diego, she became an assistant beach coach for Mira Costa College for one season. In 2017 the team won the junior college state championship.
She began coaching for WAVE Beach in 2017, working with all ages and abilities including 6th-12th grade athletes from beginner to advanced, adults, and lead instructor for the 3rd-6th grade Sand Stars with beginner and advanced level athletes. Summer also assists behind the scenes to help with the many moving parts that make WAVE Beach great. In 2020 she became the Torrey Pines High School beach head coach.
Summer has a definite knack for connecting with children of all ages and helping them to become the player they can (and want) to be. Summer aims to create a positive atmosphere where athletes feel free to fail in order to learn. She hopes all her athletes leave each day a little more skilled, became a better partner, is excited to play again, and has more knowledge and a better understanding of the game.
