OUR TEAM & PHILOSOPHY

Our Story: Family-Owned, Family-Operated, & Family-Oriented

Our passion to provide the finest possible volleyball experience to every athlete that is involved in our program – as a player, person, and student/athlete – is extremely personal to WAVE’s leadership and staff. Since ownership began in 2012, Directors Brennan & Kristen Dean (Indoor) and Director Matt Olson (Beach) emphasize athletes learning life skills and building community through team sports. WAVE stresses development of fundamental technical skills, learning to work together as a team, and personal habits that lead to success in any walk of life.

Team Dean

Brennan and Kristen Dean began their story together in 2005 with volleyball always intertwined. Having grown up in San Diego playing beach and club volleyball, Brennan attended Chico State University and set for his club team. Following completion of his Master’s degree in education with a PPS credential from Point Loma Nazarene, he took his first position as a school counselor in Northern California following a nationwide job search. Brennan landed in Kristenβ€˜s hometown, Lodi, where he was hired as the head coach of Delta Valley Volleyball Club’s 16-1 team. Following a decorated club career, Kristen had completed her undergraduate degree from the University of the Pacific, where she had completed her career as a collegiate NCAA Division I libero, and was placed by her former Club Director at Delta Valley as the assistant coach on Brennan’s squad. After working together and experiencing coaching a club season together, the Deans naturally fell in love and started their future together. Kristen moved to Tucson to complete her Master’s degree in Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Arizona, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2008. The Deans then married that year and relocated to San Diego. Brennan and Kristen then coached for WAVE founder Ed Machado at WAVE for five years.

In 2012, the Deans purchased WAVE Volleyball Club and established the WAVE Beach program with partner and executive Beach Director Matt Olson. During this time, Brennan was the district head counselor for the San Dieguito Union High School District and counseled students at Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon High schools, while Kristen was a practicing speech pathologist for nearly a decade at UC San Diego Medical Center, Tri-City Hospital, and Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas respectively. Along the way, Brennan continued to garner success as a coach and director at the club and high school (Torrey Pines High School) levels, leading his programs to several nationally ranked seasons.

With the expansion of WAVE’s facilities completed in 2015, the Deans own and operate the club exclusively, but their own team has grown in the meantime to include their silver Labrador, Teddy, their daughters, Harper and Ryan, and their son, Calvin.

The Olson Family

Matt Olson’s accomplishments in the sand as a professional player have translated to great success as one of the most well-respected beach club coaches and directors in the country, with WAVE’s beach club consistently ranking as one of the top in the US. Matt grew up in Cardiff and attended La Costa Canyon High School. After graduation, he played at Grossmont College before transferring to the University of Arizona. During his time at Arizona, Matt met his wife, Lindsey, also an avid volleyball player. He graduated Cum Laude in 2004 and they married soon thereafter. Post college, Matt tallied a 9 year pro career, competing 5 years on the AVP tour. Concurrently, Matt was the Boys Director at WAVE under Ed Machado.

Under Matt’s leadership, WAVE Beach has grown immensely and achieved great success at the state and national levels, preparing many athletes for their collegiate and/or professional careers.Β You can often find the Olsons at Moonlight beach, surfing and playing volleyball, alongside their daughters Reece and Stella, and their pup Buttercup (aka Butters).Β

The Deans and Olsons having lived and breathed volleyball as part of their stories from the time they met and through today emphasizes the deeply rooted passion for the game that fuels WAVE volleyball. Their dedicated staff shares the same vision for the mission statement and it drives everyone involved In the organization to make it the best it can be.

Coaching & Administration Staff

To help each player reach their potential as a student/athlete, we have assembled what we believe is one of the most qualified and decorated coaching staffs in the country. As a minimum requirement to be part of the WAVE staff, all of our head coaches have excelled on the court at the college level and/or in the sand. In addition, numerous coaches have indoor and professional beach experience, NCAA Championship rings, Olympic medals, or have played for the USA National Team. We pride ourselves in being excellent teachers and good role models for aspiring student-athletes. The bottom line for every family is to whom they will be entrusting the welfare of their daughter or son. Our goal collectively is to pass our knowledge and experience onto our players.Β

Β Coaching Bios Administration Bios

Our knowledgeable, prompt, and friendly administration staff is here to help families each step of the way, whether a new athlete checking out the sport for the first time, or a seasoned athlete completing their recruitment process for college.Β

Outstanding teams are the result of fundamentally sound players in every facet of the game and great team chemistry. We strive to maximize the individual skill level of every player, and then combine those players into the best possible team they can be. WAVE’s results from season to season consistently speak for themselves.

Β Milestones & Achievements

WAVE can only achieve such remarkable success by attracting the best student-athletes from throughout San Diego County. We are searching for players who want to excel on the volleyball court and classroom as well, with the goal of eventually competing at the collegiate level.Β  We highly encourage any player who desires to compete at the highest level of club volleyball to come by and check out our club.
