She was a two-sport collegiate athlete playing volleyball and running track at New Mexico Highlands University. During college, she started coaching club volleyball and club track. After graduation, she coached both sports at West High School. The following year she was asked to be the assistant coach for both sport at her alma mater. She currently coaches the JV volleyball team at Otay Ranch High School and also works as a School Counselor in the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

Nicole's Coaching Philosophy: I believe that as a coach you have the responsibility of molding your student-athlete into not only the best athlete they can be, but also, the best person they can be. We as coaches must realize that the standards we set for our athletes on the court, are inevitably going to influence their lives off the court. By helping our athletes uphold the standards we set, we in turn, aid them in developing character, discipline, self-determination and self-efficacy. A coach should be empowering their athletes to make the right and mature decisions in all areas of their lives.

To achieve these objectives a coach must establish the appropriate relationship between themselves and their athletes, built on trust, caring, character and respect. When character development is the foundation of your program, athletes are enabled to gain the most from their athletic experience. And, when this is accomplished, we as coaches are able to get the most out of our athletes.

I do not base my success as a coach on how many games I win. Rather, I tend to focus on team cohesion. My desire is to see the athletes I work with learn and refine their skills. This is the true measurement of a successful coaching program. I am committed to using all my knowledge, abilities and resources to make each player on my team more successful. My focus is to promote teamwork, commitment, and mutual respect. If this is attained, a triumphant winning team will be the outcome.

  • Nick Mercer

Nick began playing volleyball at San Marcos High School his freshman year. Up until that point, he had been involved in numerous other sports and decided to drop them all after just one day at volleyball tryouts. His passion from day one has never faded. He went on to play at UCLA and majored in Psychology, which he credits as the single most important move he made for his coaching career. After college, he became a mainstay at the Moonlight Beach volleyball courts, playing and training there almost daily and playing in beach tournaments nearly every weekend ranging from co-ed tourneys to Opens/Professional.

Nick began coaching at San Marcos High School in 2010 and continued coaching there through 2015. During his tenure at SMHS, he also coached at SoCal Volleyball Club. At SoCal, he was both a head coach indoors and the beach program director. Nick has been coaching at WAVE and WAVE Beach since 2015. His favorite memories have been coaching in the gold medal matches at the Beach Junior Nationals, the BVCA Championships, and Cal Cup.

Maintaining a positive and fun team culture while simultaneously getting athletes to think critically about volleyball is Nick's passion. He believes in making things enjoyable enough for athletes to gain the self-motivation to want to work hard without being asked. While he is detail-oriented tactically and technically, he prefers to guide the athlete into becoming self-aware enough that they know the answer before he asks it.

While Nick's passion for volleyball will always be one of his defining characteristics, he is also passionate about music. He has been in several bands over the years and plays guitar, trumpet, drums, and vocals. He still plays music regularly and says it encourages him to be creative as a coach.

He firmly believes in the ecological approach to coaching, creating an environment that encourages self-discovery and long-term skill retention.

With 25+ years of coaching experience, she brings a philosophy to her coaching that volleyball is not life, but it can teach us so much about how to live life. This great sport requires tremendous passion, commitment and teamwork. It provides us the opportunity to build relationships on and off the court through competition. She has successfully built and implemented this philosophy during her tenure with OLP (1996-2004), SDVBC (2006-2017), and as the head coach of Westview High School since 2007. She was also named the Miramar College Head Coach for Indoor and Beach Volleyball in 2022.

Coach
Felix Chu
  • felix.chu@cox.net
  • Felix Chu

Born and raised in San Diego, Felix didn’t start playing volleyball until his sophomore year of high school. Even though he got the bug late, he has made up for it by being involved in every aspect of the sport since that late start – as a player, coach, referee, and CIF representative.

Felix played for Patrick Henry High School and was a 3-year varsity letterman, eventually becoming a 2-year captain for the team and earning Eastern League co-player of the year and All-CIF Division 2 honors his senior year. His juniors club playing experience consisted of stints at both Seaside Volleyball Club and East Valley Volleyball Club, with 2 trips to the Junior National Volleyball Championships (JO’s) in the process. He continued his playing career at the University of California, Berkeley on their men’s club team for his freshman year at Cal.

Having coached the JV team on an interim basis while at Patrick Henry, Felix continued his coaching career while up in the Bay Area attending Cal. He served as the Varsity Asst. Coach and JV Head Coach for the Head-Royce School (98-00) as well as the Girls’ Varsity Head Coach at Piedmont High School (2000), taking the Piedmont team to the CIF Northern Coast Section playoffs in his only year there. On the club side of things, he coached a 16-1 team at Academy Volleyball Club for three seasons (99-01) and helped coach at the Golden Bear Volleyball Club on campus. After finishing school at Berkeley, Felix returned home to San Diego in 2001 and continued coaching by taking over the program at his alma mater, Patrick Henry High School. He compiled a 214-121 record over 7 seasons coaching both the boys and girls varsity teams as the head coach at Henry and made the CIF Section playoffs every single year during his tenure.

In 2009, with a desire to spend more time with his family and young children, Felix took a break from coaching and began his officiating career. Moving quickly up through the ranks of volleyball officials, Felix served as the “head-ref” and Instructional Chair/Rules Interpreter for the San Diego Federation Volleyball Officials Association from 2012-2016.
Having previously served on the CIF San Diego Section Advisory Committee as well as the CIF State Advisory Committee during his coaching tenure, Felix has served as the Power Rankings Coordinator since the inception of the Power Rankings system in the CIF San Diego section in 2014. He also now serves as the Championship Tournament Director for both girls and boys volleyball for the CIF San Diego section office managing both the Power Rankings used to seed the playoff brackets, running the section playoffs/finals as well as advising the CIF section office on volleyball policies and issues.

Felix met his wife, Lily, at Cal and together they have 4 children. The 3 older kids all play volleyball and have allowed Felix to expand his coaching experience to the “littles”. He now can include 10U (7-10 year olds), 11U, 12U, 13U and 14U into his coaching resume and has had success coaching these age groups in the PVL and at Nationals in the Open Division.

Felix's coaching philosophy is influenced by John Wooden and "Extreme Ownership" mixed in with "Grit" and "Chop Wood Carry Water" - essentially it focuses on preparation, effort, accountability and commitment to everything within your control.

Fun fact - Felix is working on the new Terminal 1 project at the San Diego Airport!
